behold the Lamb

I recently had the privelege of attending the “Behold the Lamb of God” tour that is hosted by Andrew Peterson and several of his friends.  I have been told over and over that this was a truely unique show that is well worth the price of admission.  Here are a few reasons why this project and tour make it easily into my top 5:

1.  Songwriting.  At the end of the day, good songwriting always wins.  I can handle poor sound, poor lights (none of which were the case for the show) but you cannot dress up poor songwriting.  AP doesn’t have to dress up anything because the writing on this project stands on its own.  Great lyrics. Great melodies.

Not to mention (but I am) that the entire project is one story.  A picture of not just the birth of Christ, but also how He was the one that was promised to save His people.

2.  Community.  The project was recorded by a community of musicians.  The tour was played by a community of musicians and friends that value uniting to share the Gospel through these songs.  I love seeing guys who could all be out playing their own shows unite together to put on one amazing show.  Plus any time you bring Bebo Norman, Andy Osenga, Andrew Gullahorn, Jill Phillips, Ben Shive, David Henry, Garret Buell, Todd Bragg, (and 2 others that I forgot their names) you will get an excellent show. Period.

3.  Intentionality.  These musicians set out to accomplish a goal in telling the true Christmas story. They were not filling time.  Not making it up as they went along.

4.  Musicianship. The musicians listed above are all outstanding at several different instruments.  The musical variety at the concert (and on the record – because they played the entire record…) was delightful.  Hammered Dulcimer, keys/b3, aux perc, cello, electrics, mandolins, great harmonies…

5. Aristic Excellence.  The group played the entire project from beginning to end. All transitions were planned.  All instrument switches were rehearsed.  Even some of the more difficult songs on the album (where one would assume “studio magic” was used) were played with excellence.

Do yourself a favor and purchase this album or go see the tour if you can!
