Makers of XxooɫƬ in the spotlight this May

A maker is someone who creates. Someone who’s curious, who wants to learn more. Someone who’s good with their hands, and interested in combining mediums in new and inventive ways.

And there are many makers at XxooɫƬ…

So we’ve decided to spend the month of May – which includes London Craft Week too – celebrating the Makers of XxooɫƬ.

Read on to discover how…

A journey through creativity

With the flagship commanding attention at the (with to follow later in the month), the excitement extends far beyond, with exhibitions taking place across the college, including in the Waterloo Centre’s Barry Till, Cardew and Foyer galleries, and at our North Kensington and Chelsea Centres too.

Visit the Stained Glass exhibition in the foyer of the Waterloo Centre, view items of sculpture and hand-crafted design in the new Chelsea Centre ‘hub’ space, or visit North Kensington for the first in a series of collaborations with artists local to the community around Portobello and Golborne Roads.

XxooɫƬ x Brown Baby

XxooɫƬ has joined forces with local art collective , setting the stage for a collaboration that promises to redefine artistic boundaries.

Together, they’ll unveil a showcase at the North Kensington Centre for Skills taking place on Fridays and Saturdays from 17 May until 1 June, emphasising the community spirit that is such a part of our North Kensington ethos.

The exhibition will be co-curated by Toby Laurent Belson and Ron Best, two local artists with decades of experience between them of exhibitions and teaching in the local area.

Inspiring individuals

The Makers of XxooɫƬ will also shine a light on examples of creative excellence from amongst the student and tutor community.

An early example comes from the Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries in the shape of millinery students Kate McGinlay, Julia Lewis and Roberta Cucuzza, who have each been recognised in the recent Feltmakers Design Awards 2024.

The competition, open to millinery enthusiasts worldwide, emphasises innovation and craftsmanship, with entrants encouraged to explore diverse techniques and styles.

With Kate securing 2nd place, Julia claiming 3rd, and Roberta honoured for Innovative Use of Felt – not to mention commendations for two fellow students – there’s plenty of evidence that the college’s Millinery courses are in rude health.

“To be validated by leading people in the industry in this way has given me such a boost – I finally feel confident that my decision to follow this career path was the right one,” said Kate McGinlay.

Makers of XxooɫƬ: a handy guide

Our new Makers of XxooɫƬ brochure is now available – both online here and in print across all our centres.

It features exhibitions and activities that are being showcased this year including , Familiar; Unfamiliar, , an explainer about Waterloo’s new Fifth Plinth sculpture, and a podcast by XxooɫƬ Radio to name a few.

The X of XxooɫƬ

What are the “X factors” that define life at XxooɫƬ London? The X of XxooɫƬ is a campaign that’s on a mission to find out…it’ll shine a light on the uniqueness that is XxooɫƬ London.

From “Artists” to “Performers” and now “Makers” too, keep an eye out over the coming months as we shine the spotlight on all that’s great about XxooɫƬ.

The Makers of XxooɫƬ runs until the end of May 2024.

The months-long relaunch of XxooɫƬ’s Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries – following a £3m refurbishment over summer 2023 – came to a crescendo as hundreds of potential students visited the site this weekend.

Following a stakeholder event at the beginning of 2024, the Creative Industries Open Day was an opportunity for potential students to experience the variety and vibrancy of the refurbished centre.

Something for everyone

The Open Day showcased XxooɫƬ’s commitment to nurturing talent across various fields, from arts and creative ventures to business, fashion, Esports, and photography.

Visitors had the opportunity to explore the newly-refurbished Chelsea Centre via a series of guided tours, offering an immersive and interactive experience, and allowing guests to explore cutting-edge resources such as Esports suites, fashion workshops, and photography labs, among others.

Throughout the day, guests were introduced to a curriculum designed to cater to diverse interests and ambitions, regardless of age or educational background.

Event highlights

The day was filled with enriching activities, including workshops, guided tours, and in-depth talks on various courses.

“This was my first time attending an Open Day – and it was great seeing the different areas of the College working together to promote XxooɫƬ, showcasing why prospective students should consider studying with us,” said Katherine Cleator, Policy and Governance Officer.

“My highlight of the day was interacting with a family, where the teen was supportive of their parents enrolling on short courses… provided it was at a different Centre to them!”

Attendees had a chance to connect with current students too, gaining valuable insights into their experiences and the opportunities awaiting them at XxooɫƬ.

Tutors hosted workshops such as printmaking onto tote bags and badgemaking. This gave future students a taste of what the centre has to offer and gave them the opportunity to explore new activities.

Interim Centre Principal Maggie Hall said: “The open day event on the 27th was all about understanding aspects of the creative industries, the pathways and the dynamic and exciting careers that exist within it.

“The day was fun and packed with activity: we had specialist talks from our lecturers, tours to showcase the new spaces following our big centre refurbishment, exhibitions, activities and workshops for everyone to get involved in. I would like to pass on my massive thanks to all those who worked together and made this event possible.”

Securing your spot for future success

As the curtains close on this year’s Creative Industries Open Day, the journey towards a future filled with endless possibilities continues. Prospective students are encouraged to secure their spots at XxooɫƬ by registering for upcoming events and embracing the opportunity to shape their creative future.

The success of XxooɫƬ’s Creative Industries Open Day serves as a testament to XxooɫƬ’s dedication to fostering talent, innovation and creativity within its vibrant community.

XxooɫƬ would like to thank all who attended and hope to see you at future events.

XxooɫƬ’s North Kensington Centre for Skills is excited to debut its vibrant Music programme this year, joining a proud XxooɫƬ musical tradition that dates back to Gustav Holst’s tenure as Director of Music and before.

Embracing the beat of the city, new classes resonate with innovation and opportunity, offering a platform for students to explore, create, and thrive in the dynamic world of music.

These courses include Pearson BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Music Industry Skills and BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Performance or Production where students can dive into the world of music.

Luke Lount – Programme Area Manager for Music in North Kensington – gave us insights into the programme, the facilities and future opportunities in W10.

Q: What sets apart the music education experience at the North Kensington Centre for Skills from other institutions?

Luke: We offer our students specialist tuition in brand new, custom-built facilities with a tailored approach to learning. Due to our smaller class sizes, we can offer a more customised experience to our learners, offering them a range of internal and external opportunities to help them pursue their goals.

Q: What types of facilities and resources are available?

Luke: Students have access to first class facilities at NK. Our custom-built recording studio is industry-standard and features three independent live rooms that can be connected to allow for the live capture of a diverse range of performances. The Mac production and composition studio is designed to be a working space for artists and producers, offering new equipment and a station per student. Finally, the rehearsal rooms are a specially designed workspace suitable for performance and live sound. Students at NK also have access to XxooɫƬ Radio’s studios as well as the brand new Main Hall for performances.

Q: Could you elaborate on any special initiatives that are integrated into the curriculum?

Luke: NK offers a variety of special programmes, workshops, and masterclasses to enrich students’ learning experiences. These include coveted work placements at renowned studios like and , backstage access at and the , mentorship through Creative Networks, and exposure to industry-active lecturers.

Q: How does collaboration play a role in the music programme at NK?

Luke: Collaboration is central to NK’s music programme, fostering interdisciplinary engagement and practical learning. Production students work closely with performers, recording and mixing compositions, while performers create music for producers. Furthermore, students are encouraged to collaborate across different subject areas, exploring the multifaceted nature of music.

Q: What career pathways can graduates of the music programme expect?

Luke: While it’s early to predict specific career pathways, graduates of NK’s music programme are equipped with practical skills and industry insights, priming them for diverse careers in performance, production, composition, and beyond. Their education and experiential learning pave the way for a harmonious future in the realm of music.

Student experiences within the programme

Malachi and Ramon are two students who are currently enrolled in the music programme at NK. They both spoke about their experience in the course, what caught their eye and advice for future students.

What drew you to the course?

Malachi: “I have had a passion for music for a long time. It is around my family who have been involved in music for a long time. My dad, brother and uncle are all musicians. I guess it is the history of my family making music that made me want to start making music.”

Ramon: “I have always wanted to do something within music. When I was younger I participated in a lot of different musical activities, although I never took it further. London is a city where there are lots of creative activities and I just wanted to go for it.”

What is your favourite part of the course?

Malachi: “I am a producer and love beat making. I love creating my own beat with drums, bass and experimenting with different genres.”

Ramon: “The studio and the sound engineering. All of the desk, how the tech side of things works. It is great to have these professional faculties to use throughout the programme.”

Any advice for further students?

Malachi: “Don’t be afraid to try all different aspects of music. Try not to narrow yourself down to one thing; there is so much out there and you never know what you might end up loving. You don’t have to be the biggest artist, there are so many different types of roles.”

Ramon: “Do your research on a programme. You don’t need to know exactly what you want to do but it is always good to shop around for a programme that suits you.”

In recent years, the world of Esports has exploded into the mainstream, captivating audiences worldwide with its blend of competition, entertainment and technological innovation.

At XxooɫƬ, we recognise the potential of this industry and are proud to offer Esports courses designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in this dynamic field.

What is Esports?

Our Esports courses provide students with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the exciting world of competitive gaming.

Through a combination of hands-on experience and theoretical study, students learn to navigate the complex landscape of Esports production, mastering key skills such as project management, broadcasting and streaming, shoutcasting, and social media management.

As our industry connections continue to grow, students are actively engaged in live esports productions, preparing them for a wide range of roles within the industry.

“I recommend that everyone dives into the world of Esports with our course at XxooɫƬ. The course and college have helped me level up my skills, conquer the virtual arena, and have been a second home for me for the last two years.” said one Esports student based at Chelsea.

Misconceptions and opportunities

The UK’s esports industry is valued at £1.5 billion, making it a significant player in the global scene. Nearly a third of young people aged 16 to 24 in the UK are interested in esports. Among European countries, the UK ranks third in terms of esports market size, following Germany and France.

Despite the rapid growth of the Esports industry, there are still many misconceptions surrounding it. One common misconception is that studying Esports is solely about playing games…whereas in truth, there is a significant focus on the importance of communication, teamwork, and skill development.

These transferable skills translate into future potential…and opportunities within the Esports industry are vast and diverse. From players and coaches to PR executives and product managers, there is a role for individuals of all interests and skill sets.

XxooɫƬ’s Esports provision prepares students for success in any number of roles, positioning them as prime candidates for the exciting career opportunities that lie ahead.

  • Player
  • Coach
  • PR or marketing executive
  • Sales or partnerships manager
  • Business management
  • Production crew
  • Shoutcaster or host
  • Journalist/content creator
  • Product manager
  • Admin or referee
  • Community or social media manager
  • Event manager

As the Esports industry continues to evolve and expand, the demand for skilled professionals will only continue to grow. XxooɫƬ is committed to providing our students with the tools and resources they need to thrive in this exciting field.

With our innovative Esports courses and industry-leading instructors, the possibilities are endless.

Join us 27 April at the Chelsea Centre Creative Industry Day from 11am to explore Esports courses and opportunities.

On the evening of 26 March, 130 attendees came together to celebrate a century of XxooɫƬ’s tenure at 61 Westminster Bridge Road.

Waterloo100 was more than just an event; it was a journey through time, exploring the rich history, experiencing the vibrant present and envisioning the exciting future of the Waterloo Centre for Adult Education.

Performances and exciting conversations

The night commenced with speeches from Dr. Andrew Gower, Principal of XxooɫƬ London, and Bushra Iqbal, Centre Principal at Waterloo, who spoke about the history of the Waterloo Centre as well as plans for its future.

XxooɫƬ’s Big Band – in both its ‘beginners’ and full guises – gave a great performance and played beautifully.

The Big Band was accompanied by Mark Ferrigan, who sang a few songs to conclude the performance, contributing to a celebratory atmosphere that showcased XxooɫƬ’s music students and their dedication to learning.

Touring the past 100 years

Members of staff hosted guided tours that took guests on an immersive exploration of the Waterloo Centre, delving into its fascinating history and showcasing its iconic spaces.

Throughout the college there were live classes, captivating exhibitions, insightful re-enactments and the dynamic XxooɫƬ Radio, every corner resonating with the spirit of XxooɫƬ’s enduring legacy.

As tours concluded, guests gathered in the Emma Cons Hall to indulge in delectable food and beverages whilst networking with other members of the XxooɫƬ community.

Congratulations to our competition winner

To celebrate 100 years at Waterloo, the college hosted a competition for a lucky attendee to win a FREE short course at the Waterloo Centre.

Bushra Iqbal, Centre Principal at Waterloo, will contact the winner this week: here’s a sneak peek.

Bushra expressed her excitement, calling Waterloo100 “a night to remember” and noting her appreciation of everyone who was part of this historic celebration.

XxooɫƬ would like to thank all of those who attended including Friends of XxooɫƬ, stakeholders, students and colleagues who joined us for this special occasion.

Here’s to another century of excellence, innovation, and community at XxooɫƬ in SE1.

Higher Technical Qualifications are new qualifications introduced by the government to boost skills and opportunities for adults.

Informed with employers’ input, HTQs offer the latest industry-relevant training which employers have said they need. They offer students the right training, knowledge, and skills to succeed in the workplace.

We met up with Melanie Butcher, Higher Technical Qualifications Lead at XxooɫƬ, to learn more about HTQs and how they can influence adult education and career ambitions.

Q: What are Higher Technical Qualifications?

Mel: Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are new Level 4 and Level 5 qualifications developed by awarding bodies in collaboration with employers to equip students with the necessary training, knowledge, and skills they need to succeed in the workplace.

As part of the government’s higher technical education reforms, HTQs serve as a viable alternative to apprenticeships or degrees, filling the gap between A levels or T Levels and degrees.

From September 2024, XxooɫƬ will introduce a range of Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) and additional fully – funded Level 4 and Level 5 courses designed to offer a practical skill – based approach to careers in business, finance and healthcare, ensuring students are equipped with the sought-after skills that employers are looking for.

Q. Could you tell us more about what Level 4 and Level 5 qualifications are…

Mel: Of course, higher education can be confusing with its different levels and titles. Education is traditionally measured in levels beginning at entry and working up so for instance a student studying A levels would be at Level 3.

Level 4 and 5 are higher education levels that would encompass studying at a higher level at college or university, for example on a degree or postgraduate level of study. HTQs are classed as Level 4 and 5 dependent on the course.

A good place to find out more is at gov.uk

Q: Who can benefit from HTQs?

HTQs are tailored for individuals aged 18 and above seeking to enhance their skill set, pursue new career paths, or attain formal qualifications.

Q: How are HTQs delivered?

All our HTQs will be a blend of classroom-based sessions in college, live webinars and interactive e-learning, with an emphasis on developing practical and transferable skills for work-based scenarios.

Q: What financial support is available for HTQ students?

Mel: Students may apply for tuition fee loans, maintenance loans, and grants depending on their circumstances and the type of HTQ being pursued.

These loans and grants can help cover tuition fees, living costs, and other educational expenses.

You can find out more information by visiting .

Q: What HTQ courses are offered at XxooɫƬ?

Mel: At XxooɫƬ, we are offering the following HTQ courses:

Q: Tell us more about the free fully – funded module?

Mel: Yes, and this is really exciting… we are able to offer learners a free module, fully – funded by the government.

Learners can select a free module of their choice from the Leadership and Management HTQ course. The free modules on key business topics have all been designed to equip learners with the knowledge and practical skills needed in leadership and management roles across a range of different sectors.

They can choose one of the following modules:

These modules provide learners the chance to explore the Leadership and Management course while earning a Certificate of Unit Credit (CoUC), paving the way for promotion, career development and progression to further HE study such as the full Leadership and Management HTQ course.

Q. This all sounds great. So, Mel, who do people contact for more information?

With Women’s History Month (WHM) having drawn to a close, XxooɫƬ reflects on a month filled with insightful events, engaging discussions and inspiring exhibitions.

Throughout March, the college welcomed staff, students, and members of the public to participate in various activities that celebrated the achievements and contributions of women.

Women Pioneers of XxooɫƬ

The ‘Women Pioneers of XxooɫƬ’ booklet outlines a captivating narrative that spans from the visionary Founder Emma Cons to the current cohort of accomplished staff and students.

From the first few pages, you will see the legacy of Women at XxooɫƬ: from our Founder Emma Cons, to contemporary staff and student profiles.

This contrast between historical female figures with modern day female success stories at XxooɫƬ is at the heart of this campaign, showing a spirit that is still very much alive today.

This booklet canbe found at all centres and downloaded below.

Lectures for a penny / Education for the community

One of the standout events of WHM was the Penny Lecture by Caroline Ings-Chambers, which explored the parallels between historical narratives of child maltreatment and contemporary definitions of child abuse. With 31 attendees, the lecture provided valuable insights into the intersections of history, culture, and social issues, drawing on academic research and real-world examples.

Caroline Ings-Chambers, PhD, is an esteemed researcher and lecturer at XxooɫƬ, specialising in Victorian Studies and the role of women in nineteenth-century society. Her work delves into the complexities of the era, shedding light on often-overlooked aspects of history and literature.

Caroline also teaches Pilates at XxooɫƬ: click here to explore her classes starting this term

Empowering Exhibitions

Throughout WHM, XxooɫƬ showcased the talents of its students through a series of exhibitions. From fine art to fashion design, these exhibitions provided a platform for students to express their creativity and explore themes related to women’s experiences.

Highlights include the Fridge exhibition featuring HE Fine Art and Access to HE students, the Puppets exhibition by UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma Creative Practice students, and the Interim show featuring UAL Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design and Fashion students.

Spreading the word: stats, reach, and impact

With in-person events ranging from lectures to exhibitions, this year’s WHM campaign reached a wide audience within the college community. But a comprehensive social media campaign really helped spread the word much more widely thanks to XxooɫƬ’s expansive online following,  drawing in a diverse audience and sparking meaningful conversations.

Through social media, word of mouth, and promotional efforts, XxooɫƬ was able to amplify the reach of its WHM events, ensuring that the celebration of women’s history resonated far and wide.

Below are some statistics from our social media campaign showing impressions from XxooɫƬ’s Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X (formerly Twitter) – e.g. the number of times people had the opportunity to see a WHM post from XxooɫƬ. The green figures below show the increase from last year’s campaign, reflecting growth across all channels.

Continuing the celebration

While Women’s History Month may have officially ended,as part of the wider work of our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion working group,XxooɫƬ London is committed to continuing the celebration of women’s achievements throughout the year.

“I’m proud that XxooɫƬ has celebrated Women’s History Month so actively this year with guest speakers and podcasts as well as reporting the improvement in our Gender Pay Gap, with the gap reduced since last year. XxooɫƬ’s commitment to equality started with its founder, Emma Cons and our celebrations and College today reflect the same ideals that she held.My thanks to Marketing Campaigns Manager Amani, who has put so much work into leading the programme of activity this year” – Alison McNamara, co-chair of the EDI working group.
